Welcome To Our Blog!
Welcome to the blog of the Joseph Lawrence House Bed & Breakfast, established and maintained in honour of its namesake, Joseph Hill Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence was born in Newmarket, Ontario in 1808. His parents and grandparents came to Canada from Massachusetts near Boston in 1806. They eventually moved to York where they became prominent citizens active in York politics and business. The family, Joseph included, were known as liberal political Reformers because they advocated for the establishment of an elected representative government in Upper Canada. Joseph was well educated for his day having been trained as a Printer to Parliament of Canada at the Canada Gazette, the official record of the Canadian Parliament. Arriving in Hurontario Mills near what eventually became the Town of Collingwood, he served as its first clerk when it was incorporated as a town in 1858 until his death in 1877. As such, he was a highly regarded entrepreneurial citizen of the community who variously functioned as land speculator, auctioneer, insurance agent, newspaper publisher and the first Sunday School superintendant of the Wesleyan Methodist Church.
From time to time we will submit brief commentaries on matters which may be of general interest to local citizens and visitors to Southern Georgian Bay. We welcome opinions and contributions from our readers.
